FAQs

WHAT IS STERLING SILVER?
Sterling silver is made from 92.5% silver and 7.5% alloy, as silver in its pure state is too soft to make jewellery.
An alloy is a mixture of two or more elements taken from the periodic table. For sterling silver the alloys may contain copper, zinc or nickel. A full description is provided for each item, some of which are nickel free.
WHAT IS 9CT GOLD OVERLAY?
Some items supplied by Little Gems Jewellery have an embellishment of 9ct rose or yellow gold overlay. This is an overlay or coating of 9ct gold applied to sterling silver by an electrochemical process.
WHAT ARE CUBIC ZIRCONIA?
Cubic Zirconia (CZ) are lab created zirconia, commonly used in the jewellery world. They have intense sparkle and add a beneficial dimension to jewellery design.
CLEANING OF STERLING SILVER
All silver, regardless of purity, will overtime, tarnish. The tarnish is created by exposure to oxygen and sulphur in the atmosphere, as well as cosmetic and chemical components.
Regular cleaning with a lint free cloth is recommended to remove tarnish, as build up of tarnish is more difficult to remove.
There are commercial silver cleaners available which should be used with care, always following manufacturer’s instructions.
